Ben Slater's father chose to disregard the warnings of the wagon master and the scout. He headed their family's covered wagon away from the trail to a line of trees far in the distance. Ben and his mother worried. They feared the danger of leaving the protenction of the wagon train. They prayed.
Later as he opened his eyes he heard silence. This was the beginning of the worst day of his life.
He had no way to know that his anguish would turn to the joy of accomplishment. He worried and followed each idea as it came. God led him step by step.
As days passed he grew stronger physically and emotionally, struggling to provide a shelter and food. Winter would come too soon. He was left with very little in the wagon. He thanked God that they had not burned it. He had no way of knowing that his small daily efforts were the beginning of something very special. Ben was developing the start of a ranch that would last as his family's home through time, until the end of time as we know it.
Sorrow lay in his heart and tormented his mind. He had not found his sister after the raid. God would use her too, to bring salvation to a savage people.

The reader is immediately pulled into the story as this 15 year old leaves his lifelong home to travel west on a wagon train with his younger sister and parents. The story tragically unfolds as Ben loses his family in an Indian ambush. As Ben struggles against loneliness and predator attacks, the reader sees the strength in persistence, optimism and faith. The author of this book seems to have extensive knowledge of what is necessary to survive in the wild. The story includes details like building a portable fire and tracking an animal. But by the end of the story we see that simply surviving isn't enough. Having faith and preserving, even in the midst of great tragedy and fear, is what makes a person whole. A wonderful read for teens and adults who appreciate faith enriched historical fiction.Product details

This book is remind me to be in constant prayer once again. I myself have been a Christian since 2004 I've seen a lot of trials and tribulations I've also been a student to prophecy since that time. In my studies I've learned a lot about this world and I do believe that one day if we are left behind this book will definitely help teach us to survive in the world to come. Thank you Louise!
